SHOTA

Who is Shota

For the uninitiated, Shota is in fact Mnqobi Mdabe, with Shota being his clan name. He was born in KZN into a family of 4. He knew at a very young age that he had been bitten by the proverbial music bug, and wanted to do something big in the industry. When he finished school, he together with long-time friend and music partner Nathi (better known as Black Coffee) went on to study for a Diploma in light Music at the then Natal Technikon.
That’s where as they say ‘the eagle took flight’. Shota and Black Coffee met Demor and the trio formed the now very well respected group Shana in 1997 with Shota taking on the Lead Vocalist role.

The Shota we know

shotaShota is certainly not new to the hits arena. He started his own record label ShotaMusicin 2007, His passion is to build well rounded artists who take their craft seriously. He has since signed and released award winning artist Phila; and Phumeza, who has not only released the popular album “Just Listen”, but has also graces our small screens in TV shows and adverts. Of course not to forget the one and only Zano and Dj Andy XHe doesn’t end there though.
Shota has collaborated with major influences in the dance arena. Dj’s and vocalists alike. We are talking here Culoe de Song on
"YiniNgawe
", DJ Euphonik on "Seng’khathele" and a score of songs on several artists’ albums like Big Nuzz, Black Coffee, Theo Kgosinkwe, Kelly Khumalo, Bantu Soul and a lot more.

BLACK COFFEE

Blackcoffee

Real Name:
Nkosinathi Maphumulo
Profile:
South African DJ, producer and keyboardist Nathi Maphumulo first cut his musical teeth as part of his school's choir, then studied music theory at the Natal Technikon where he met the other members of his group, Shana.

His career was jumpstarted after participating at the Red Bull Music Academy in 2003, and he's been producing his brand of deep afro-house and remixing both local and international artists ever since.BlackCoffee's eponymous compilation mix CD from 2005 won the "Best Dance Album" award at the 12th SAMAs.

Known and loved for the often jazzy, always soulful, vocal house remixes he releases under his Soulistic Music Label and for delighting crowds around the world spinning the decks in record-breaking sets, the enigmatic Black Coffee is one of South Africa's most internationally renowned songwriters and producers.
Previous albums have gone Gold and Platinum and in the past seven years his Soulistic Label has paved the way for a number of other artists to tour internationally, helping to establish a global presence for South African dance music. His last album, Home Brewed, released in 2009, is heading for Double Platinum sales.

In 2010 he won SAMA awards for Best Urban Dance Album and Best Male Artist; in 2011 he was nominated for an MTV Europe Africa, India and Middle East Category Award for the best Worldwide Act, and for the 2012 SAMA Awards he received two nominations for Best Remix of the Year. With all of this under his belt, it's an understatement to say that Black Coffee is a luminary in the music industry.
And now he's ready to shake things up again with the launch of his new DVD, Africa Rising, in June this year. Filmed live at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, Black Coffee accompanied by a number of guest artists including Bucie, Victor Ntoni, Thiwe, Black Moses, Brothers of Peace, Zakes Bantwini, Tumelo and others, played with a 24 piece orchestra to 8 000 + ecstatic fans, performing the tracks that made him an international phenomenon. The DVD also includes never seen before behind-the-scenes footage and is set to be shown at select cinemas nationwide, broadcast across Africa and streamed through handsets.

The man that is clearly driving a cultural generation has also signed up to become the face of iconic South African coffee brand, Frisco's innovative ‘Wide Awake Shake' campaign, which celebrates the launch of new Frisco Granules. The campaign sees South African celebrities and consumers get the Wide Awake Shake when they are "Mugged" by Frisco and Black Coffee. Black Coffee surprises unsuspecting nominees, who have been set up by friends and colleagues, with a crew of dancers to not only give them a ‘Wake Up!', but to present them with amazing prizes and tickets to the hottest house party of the year, at a top secret venue to be hosted by Black Coffee at the end of June.

Added to this he has also just started touring South Africa on a multi-date Soulistic Music Nights tour which kicked off at the most talked about music event of the season at Hatfield Square on 4 May, where he and others played for 5 000 plus people.
In June he heads off on a European tour to the UK, Portugal, France, Spain and Italy; followed by a Summer Tour in Greece from in late July into August 2012 and then back again, just in time to play at Oppiekoppie in South Africa before he heads to the USA for yet another tour in October.
With such a tight schedule Black Coffee still makes time to give back wherever and whenever possible to his community through the DJ Black Coffee Foundation, set up in the wake of a personal tragedy, to help improve the quality of life for people with disabilities and for the orphaned.
"It is my way of giving back to the community and country that has provided both shelter and success in my life", says Black Coffee.

BLACK-MOTION

Who is Black Motion?
Black motion is two producers. And on stage there’s a percussionist, Thabo ‘Smol’ Mabogevane, and a deejay Bongani ‘Murder’ Mokosana on the decks. We both produce and form Black Motion.

Where does the name ‘Black Motion’ come from?
The explanation behind ‘Black Motion’ is actually deep. When Murder is on the decks, he causes a motion – he causes people to move. And when I (Thabo) am on the percussion – you just go blank ( a blackout). So that’s the Black Motion Movement.

When did you get into the music scenes?
It started in 2010 when Oskido (DJ) discovered us. He found our track Bonana Mavoka through Afrodesia mp3, liked it and wanted to work with us. That was our breakthrough song.

Your debut album is a double disk, explain that.
On the first disk we feature guests and the second is just us. The second album is only one disk.

Tell us about Nanka Amaphoyisa
Nanka Amaphoyisa is not on our current album. It’s a track that we did with Fresca, it came late. DJ fresca will be featuring it on his upcoming album. And it’s an old song.
Old song but it took a long time to take out a video, why is that?
That’s how we do our thing. We release a track and instead if immediately killing the momentum, we let it ( the track) play on radio, let it get played onto people’s ears and go around. The later on that’s when we release the video. We wanna sustain the track. When the video comes out it’s just fresh, it sounds like its fresh and when it starts playing again at the club you think about the video even though it was released back then. It still has that thing after the video.

So how has the feedback been from all the people?
We’re certainly getting what we didn’t expect what we didn’t expect. Wherever we go, people are always talking about our CD. It’s a shame at some countries where we always perform at like Angola, they don’t have our CDs in stores, so they always ask for people that they know to buy for them when they come to South Africa. People love us.

You’ve performed in Angola?
Yes, more than a million times! We always get bookings that side, more than we do in South Africa.

What have you learnt so far about the industry?
Not to BMF (Blow Money Fast) and buy expensive cars yet.

How did the invitation to play at the Miami Winter Music Conference come about?
Oskido told us that they were wanted us over there, they have heard our music and like it. DJ Fresh said so as well, so many people. We have had a lot of international deejays play our music. We’ll be playing at four gigs this year.
